Modbus OPC UA Server

The MayilVeera Modbus OPC UA Server provides a structured connection between Modbus field equipment and OPC UA client applications. It reads operational data from configured Modbus devices, converts registers and coils into meaningful tags, and presents them through an OPC UA address space.

The product can be used in brownfield modernisation, protocol migration, machine connectivity, energy monitoring, and OT-to-IT integration projects where existing Modbus equipment must remain in service.

How It Works

The document flow is presented as an implementation-style process so visitors can understand the operating path quickly.

  1. 01

Modbus devices and their communication settings are configured.

  2. 02

Register or coil addresses are mapped to descriptive tags.

  3. 03

The server polls the configured devices according to the selected intervals.

  4. 04

Raw values are converted using the configured data type, byte order, scaling, and engineering units.

  5. 05

The converted information is published through the OPC UA server.

  6. 06

OPC UA applications browse, read, subscribe to, or—where enabled—write values.

  7. 07

Communication errors and device health are exposed through diagnostics.

Applications

Where It Fits

Benefits

Practical Benefits

Retains existing Modbus equipment while enabling modern data access

Reduces the need for application-specific Modbus drivers

Presents raw register information as structured operational tags

Centralises device and tag configuration

Provides a common interface to multiple OPC UA consumers

Supports phased plant modernisation

Integration and Deployment

Deployment begins with a Modbus device survey covering communication type, addressing, baud rate or network settings, register maps, data types, polling requirements, and read/write permissions. OPC UA namespace design and client-security requirements are then agreed before commissioning.

The server may be positioned close to the equipment at the edge or installed on an industrial computer or server, subject to the supported operating environment.

Reliability and Security

Communication timeout and retry handling
Automatic reconnection behaviour
Per-device communication-health indication
Invalid-value and tag-quality handling
Controlled access to writable tags
OPC UA certificate and identity management, where supported
Configuration backup and restore
Event and diagnostic logging

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Can it connect Modbus equipment to an OPC UA SCADA system?

A

Yes, when the device’s Modbus variant, register map, data types, and required OPC UA client profile are supported.

Q

Does it support writing from OPC UA to Modbus?

A

Write support should be enabled only for mapped writable points and must be confirmed in the product’s supported-function matrix.

Q

Can it communicate with different brands of equipment?

A

It is intended for standards-based Modbus integration, but compatibility must be checked using the device register map and an integration test.
